Here are my thoughts on today’s life for Senior Citizens.
August 23.2020
Today I noticed that Starbucks was open after being closed for a week, as there were people driving through, and a fellow opened the front door and walked in.
After buying my Sunday paper and coffee at the gas station, I was eager to get something from my favorite coffee shop.
When I opened the door , a table was blockading any walk in customers.
The sign said, “ Mobile pick-up Only”.
I explained to the clerk that I did not have the proper App to order coffee.
He said I could go to the drive through.
I asked if I could walk through?
No, it is for cars only.
O.k.
No apps, no car, no service.
Goodby Starbucks.
The digital commerce has passed me by, and having no personal transportation cuts me out of participating in drive through coffee shops, fast food restaurants or dry cleaners.
I am also limited as to the times that I can shop at a grocery store, and drug stores.
They prefer us “older customers” to come early in the morning, and reserve the store for a few hours just for us.
I am o.k. with that, as I get up early and go out to beat the heat, and now smoke filled air.
The other things that are passing me by are video games, streaming movies, shopping online, and online applications to any state office, as my computer won’t accept my password.
This Brave New World of high technology prevents me from buying a cold drink at the doctor’s medical building, as I do not have the phone app. The machines do not even accept credit cards like the laundromat does. Forget the coin operated vending machine!
Those are being regulated to the recycling pile.
The problem of trying to keep up with new technologies is just too hard for elderly people who may have vision and hearing problems, and trying to understand directions for using anything new, like a cell phone is beyond us.
I am reverting to going through my old photos and hand written letters as they provide true pictures of my past reality.
New technology is for the young who hopefully are getting the education to best apply this technology.
