Demagogues for all
A personal friend of mine, high up in the Canadian Department of Defense, says that Trump is not only an idiot, but a dangerous demagogue. My friend is frightened at the number of his own professional colleagues who have bought into the idea that Clinton is just “same old same old and at least there will be a change under Trump.” He states that there was change under Hitler too!
Today I read in the news that Stephen Hawking (the other famous Stephen) is very puzzled about the following that Trump has. He states the truth is that “He is a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator.”
Other comments on the internet list several commentators who call Trump “a fool.”
I have been chastised by my old friends for calling Trump an idiot, but the other commentators agree with me and predict a poor outcome for the country if Trump takes his foolish demagoguery to the White House.
What am I to say to my friends in the wider world?
How can I explain the outright blindness of our population when it comes to political matters?
We are simply too selfish to acknowledge that a person who spouts nonsense with every public utterance is not the best choice to lead us.
The world looks on askance at our antics, and we are still considered barbarians by Old World societies, so how to redeem ourselves?
By and large people in America are not tuned into history. That seems to be our biggest failing in understanding how governments and leaders affect the present and the future.
Can I give anyone any assurance that we will not go off the deep end and start behaving like some Far Eastern despot? Are we doomed to fall into idiocy every time a new slick demagogue comes along?
There are a lot of dissatisfied voters here, with plenty of discrimination, prejudices and outright hatreds being brought to a boil this election season.
I think that is what is to be expected with a 24 hour news cycle and the society that permits such democracy of action and thought.
How will it all play out?
