Frankie & Johnny
There is this old song that came to mind after this last week’s hullabaloo in New York and Washington.
“Frankie and Johnny were lovers-“and something about oh how they could woo.
The wooing was done by Johnny, and the Bigger Woo-Woo performed by Frankie.
So what does it all mean that a leading religious figure makes the television pundits all dewy eyed and loudly proclaim him the People’s Pope?
What does it mean for the rest of us who dislike both Frankie and Johnny for hypocrites and snake oil salesman to have to listen to this hogwash on all media fronts?
Let me take up my knife of Truth and cut through the religious BS first.
No matter how the Great Whore of Babylon apologizes and pays for lawsuits for past crimes of the pederast priests, the knife says that these actions do not prove the religion to be valid, correct, or even faintly touching on reality. How can whole populations not see how they have been bamboozled?
Probably because they wish to be. There have been cases in the past of this blindness to truth, and we of the older generation remember it as Nazi propaganda. So what if a billion people believe that there is magic that nullifies the laws of physics, that there used to be talking snakes in the mythical Garden, and that death will be cheated in another dimension?
What it means for the rest of us is control, harsh laws, discrimination, and pain.
Making it easier for this snake oil salesman Frankie was the enabler Johnny. He fought so hard to get his friend into the limelight so they could advance the propaganda of the Christian religion.
This hook up of law maker and religious zealotry makes for a good television movie, but does not fit into a humane life. `
Friendly Frankie tried very hard to convince us that black is white, but whole droves of women are saying “ count me out” when it comes to following the Leader, at least when it comes to matters of contraception and being tied down with a passel of children.
Others have commented on the state of women in tough religions, the lack of recognition, the over bearing patriarchism and the general mistrust of the Feminine. That all is changing, but not fast enough in my humble opinion.
Other commentators are wondering what happens next in our government when we get a new honcho in the House of Representatives.
I have a sneaking hunch that it will be business as usual, and much jockeying for position of the Top Dog.
When we look at the past, and how the biggest money bags gets the plum jobs, and favors from office holders, it is remarkable that Johnny was considered a man that could compromise. Now that compromise has become a dirty word in the Republican lexicon, the struggle will continue and spill out of the old smoke filled rooms to the public arena.
Some observers from other lands have wondered if our government can survive this adversarial type of doing business. Shakespeare had some things to say about that, and it was not pretty.
Must we continually behave like the Romeo and Juliet scenario and live to regret our losses?
What we lose in following the strident call of the religious and bigoted leader is our humanity, nothing less.
