America the Great
Now that we have suffered through another massive eating spree, and followed up with massive shopping online spree, what is it about our country that makes it great?
Is it the amount of food we can stuff in our pie holes?
Is it the amount stuff we can buy?
If we are not great at the present, how was it in the past that we yearn for?
Let me tell you.
In 1958 I was newly married, with only enough money to rent a $50 per month furnished apartment. We had no phone, so we missed telling our relatives that we would not be there at Thanksgiving. I had not received an invitation, so they waited a long time and finally had dinner without us.
After a telegram that came to the apartment the next day, we visited and straightened it all out. The family, in laws, always made sure to verbally give us an invitation after that.
Later dinner at the Parents house devolved into having to listen to the head of household, a true Teutonic male chauvinist, pronounce about all the ills of the world.
I could have done without that.
After the first baby came, we did have a phone, but as there was no one to call to come and help me out, I came home from the hospital after one night, and tended to everything myself. I called no old friends, as they were busy with their lives.
I had no diaper service, or canned milk supplement. We boiled the bottles, and mixed up Karo syrup and condensed milk for formula.
It was unfortunate that the first baby developed colic, but we just dealt with it without help from in laws or parents or aunts, or siblings.
I washed diapers and hung them out on a clothesline. The washer was a ringer washer operated with a quarter. Now I use a credit card and get 45 minutes on the dry cycle. With an outdoors clothesline the sun shine is free, and unlimited time. Of course since it never rains in California, I never had to dash out and grab clothes while it poured.
Was this the Great America we want?
To make America Great again, as the leader (New Dictator) promises us, we would have to give up a bit of progress it seems to me.
