I know that most of my posts deal with religion, but since our society is saturated with people who just dearly love to hound others about their choice of religions, I see no way to avoid the subject.
Every time I use a certain railway station, there is a display of literature with people standing by eager to explain how I can be “saved”. Many books incorporate the theme so one has to be careful and read the jacket blurbs carefully to avoid getting suckered into another Hounding for Jesus theme.
Today I was speaking to an elderly gentleman at the bus stop and somehow the conversation got switched from the app that gives the bus arrival times to his handing out a pamphlet on Jesus!
After I told him that his religion was fantasy, that I was an atheist, that I only used logic instead of faith, he went his way and I sat far away from him on the bus.
How did it come to this?
Why can’t we have some peace and quiet to figure out our own philosophy and way of dealing with reality?
I blame communications.
When I was a girl, we had a rotary phone. No one called who was a stranger, no one talked about religion at school, in public waiting for a train, or any time in our household when we were not in church.
We never discussed the sermon or any meaning of the sacraments. No one hounded us to convince us we had to be “saved”. We went to confession Friday, communion Sunday over and done!
Now that the Catholic religion is in free fall, the others seem to come out of the woodwork to fill the void.
Shoo! All of you just go away!
