I know a very smart and compassionate man who lives in S.F. I asked him how the Gay Rights matter was affecting his life. Even though he works with gays, he stated that he does not even think about gay rights or same sex marriage. It does not apply to him. He goes on about his daily life and avoids all the parades and hoopla that characterize life in S.F.
I at least follow along in the news, but he is too busy to do anything but cursorily glance at the on line headlines. How can a person who lives in such a vibrant and politically active city just go along and ignore the flash points of life like that.
It probably is very easy when you have to earn a living by running your own business, and have just enough time and energy to provide for your family, gas up the car, go shopping , and read a night time story to your kid.
When one has barely any free time, politics get ignored.
I have gay friends, old friends, religious friends, atheist friends, and boat owning friends. We all do our appointed work in various charities and clubs and even when we get a chance to sit and have a cool beer, we talk about ourselves and not the bigger picture. Somehow what I did when I was living in my station wagon tops the conversational chart over what the Supreme Court does.
This late in life I have learned to let go the hot topics and say “Who cares?” just like that busy man in S.F.
How I wish others could do the same.
