Yesterday I visited a busy shopping mall in the Bay Area. We see all ethnic groups here and consider ourselves very tolerant, and liberal.
When I saw a young woman,( I hope it was a woman) being escorted by a man and baby in a stroller who was dressed in a full black burka, I was shocked.
This person had only a small slit in the face veil to see where she was going. It is good that she had someone to escort her around, as there are many pitfalls in walking around a shopping mall.
I considered her handicapped. I considered her to be a prisoner, brought from a controlling, paternalistic culture and plopped down in an alien country. There are many things she will not be able to do, or if trying to do will find it difficult.
She can’t play on the equipment at a park with her child. She can’t leave the house alone. She cant drive a car legally, as she would have to take the face covering off to get an identifying photo taken. That was tried already in Florida, and the judge laughed them out of court when they tried to sue the DMV for not allowing the license to be issued with a photo of a woman in full regalia.
On the other hand she will never appear on any computer using face recognition software. She probably is not allowed on Facebook either.
She can’t run from a possible molester, she can’t go out after dark and watch fire works, she can’t go to a nightclub or chaperone a high school dance.
Bicycling would probably be out also.
Any participant sport?
Maybe she is allowed to play backgammon at home with trusted relatives.
This is an extreme example of how we as human beings restrict ourselves through wearing clothing.
Our men have to suffer wearing strings of cloth around their necks, which makes it handy to choke them if wanted.
Our women wear ridiculous things on their feet, and rather like the old Chinese of foot binding, make it impossible to run from danger. We buy and wear other stuff that is just as bad, like recycled plastic dresses, nose rings, and boob piercings. Just about every thing a human could do to look silly or suffer handicaps in movement has been tried through fashion fads or religious regimentation.
How necessary is the little black cap worn by Jewish men? How stylish is a head gear that looks like a checkered tablecloth? How comfortable are nylon underwear worn by certain American based religions that guarantee bladder infections and yeast growth? This also cuts down on libido which in my opinion is the only positive factor.
If you don’t dress to fit the weather, but to be dutifully obedient to some prophets’ restrictions, or to be a slave to fashion, you can expect criticism, and health issues.
We do not belong to prep schools with a dress code, but some jerks like to run around with a tape measure to see if the pants length on men are correct, or if the skirt length on women meet the religious dress constrictions.
It is too bad that nudist colonies are on the wane. We could use some transparency.
