From 1845-1850 approximately a million people died of starvation in Ireland because of a fungus that wiped out the potato crop
Because there was such dependance on one crop the whole country emptied out and sent many millions off to America. The rich landowners, mainly the invading British did nothing to help out poor farmers, but left them to die, and evicted most when they could not pay rent.
The safety nets were not in evidence.
The potato today has had the opposite effect on the American descendents of those Irish immigrants and contributes to our growing obesity problem.
I would not say that potatoes are solely to blame for our over eating, but the salt on the French Fries and fat content in the fast food has made addicts out of our children.
Recently some schools have dropped out of the federally funded lunch programs because the potatoes are being served without salt, and the kids just throw away the “healthy” lunches. The non fat cheese is treated the same way.
The tough love type parents would say ” Let them go hungry for a while”, but the school administrations have withdrawn from the program, and bought the little kiddies junk food out of the general budget, which was intended for books and other teaching materials.
Education is failing our children when we are overpowered by ads from the fast food franchises hocking Double Bacon Cheeseburgers and soft drinks at a cheap price, selling large sodas for a dollar.
What difference is there between Big Food in America and the reigning royalty of 1850 Ireland?
Both policies of neglect and greed bring on death- either from starvation or over eating, diabetes and heart attacks.
The POTATO- an all purpose weapon in culling human beings!
