We like to think that in America we stand up for the rights of the downtrodden and protect women and children.
Lately in the news and on the relevant websites, the fact that the U.S government and our tax dollars contribute to the sexual slavery of women and girls has been discussed. There has been a suggestion that these men who accrue harems in Utah and Arizona should pay for the upkeep of their children, as at present any unmarried mother gets to collect benefits from us all to support the polygamous family life.
There is no difference between these women and those three women held captive for 11 years in Cleveland. They were sexual slaves.
In the polygamous families the teen girls are sold by their parents to the head boss man, and have no way to escape.
We think that polygamy only exists in Muslim countries and that slavery by rich Arabs against the poor Philippine women who work for them are the only cases that occasionally come to our attention.
In the Intermountain states there are tens of thousands of enslaved women who in turn enslave their daughters, while the captive government ruled by the theocracy of Utah turns a blind eye.
When are we going to wake up to the fact that religious societies are not for the purpose of raising morally straight children, but only to control and exploit them? What is the difference between a predatory Catholic priest and the head of a household of “sister wives?” In my mind, there is no difference.
