When I was in high school I took Biology and Chemistry. My teacher at the time was careful to teach evolution very factually and never had any trouble with “Intelligent Design”. I still write to him and talk on the phone often. At 90 years of age he is still running his own affairs, and being a sharp fellow has several houses that he rents out for income.
I have not asked him what he thought of the new Cosmos program hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, but I am sure that he would not argue with the science part of it.
The time line of the development of the eye in priitive creatures was to me the proof that we did all evolve from primeval ooze, and mutations that enabled animals to survive long enough to breed and hand the mutations along was presented so logically I cannot phathom how anyone could believe in the so called ID.
The problem with fighting against the forces of ignorance can be laid to the connection of the world through electonic means, and the concentration of money into large religious organizations.
If your income from members depends on them believing that the sun revolves around the earth, and large organizations like the Catholic Church have a great stake in having all members believe what is taught as gospel truth, then science automatically becomes the enemy and heresy.
The entertainment industry does not help the evolutionary forces along either, with their bloated fairy tales of floods and arks. That would be such a nightmare scenario for any captain of a ship- how do you deal with the sanitation involving large animals, and would the animals readily go on a diet and not eat their normal food sources?
Ah– when there is money to be made, either by producing yet another Biblical tale such as talking snakes in the Garden of Eden, crucifiction, miracle healing, & floating animal cruise ships, then reason, logic and science go out the window.
The one thing that people think when they look up at the Milky Way and feel that human beings are small and insignificant just annoys me no end. When I look up at the cosmos, I see large bodies of star matter revolving and moving through space. That is it. There is no mind involved, there are no galaxies building anything, just the humand mind.
I like to give credit to those who built the telescopes and spaceships so that we could appreiciate our own prowess. The universe is large, but it just sits there.
