Today I heard a nice speech given by our Lt. Governor, Gavin Newsom, who warned us that we were behind in education in this country and in government connections. Where he came out with something new was the use of the internet in 2008 by B. Obama, and how the main concern of those polled was the “legalization of marijuana. Evidently the future voters were not too concerned about taxes, jobs, powerful corporations stealing an election or even about the religion of a presidential candidate.
That shows that the poll was slanted by those who understood how to use the internet, which was not anyone over 65 for the most part.
It is said that the Republicans are not appealing to the youth, Hispanic, women or persons of color. The internet can be a double edged sword in that all pronouncement from political parties get broadcast on many platforms, and quantity leads over quality.
So what if our young voters want more pot? They will be running the world in twenty.years anyway, and can vote in what they want
It shows me that the youth polled were not using the questions seriously, or that they really did not take big problems seriously like what would their lives be like with flooding and droughts caused by global climate change?
Mr. Newsom was concerned that after the election the platform for interchange between potential supporters was closed down and there was no more give and take, only the top down model of a web site in the old pattern.
What did he expect? That the President was going to continue to take opinions seriously if there was no discussions of the immense problems in the world., but only a whining about “Not enough legal pot”?
Yes, we are lagging in how we educate kids, and yes two year old kids can operate an iPad and play with Dora the Explorer, learn the alphabet by four, and count to a hundred by self teaching with electronic devices. That does not mean that we have to upend all our school organizations and plant a radio chip in each baby to revolutionize education.
We cannot force learning, and we have to provide down time from electronics and the IT and global connections to relax and watch the clouds drift by and smell the roses, (Not the weed).
