I always thought that I had enugh money to meet my modest needs and to share around the extra. I used to donate to different environmental groups, different children’s hospitals, political causes, and buy expensive magazines.
Why? When I was on welfare and food stamps, I was on the recieving end of the contract, and knew where to find the food banks and clothes closets. It was alway drummed into us in church that it is better to give than recieve. Now I think I will opt out of either giving or recieving.
Every dollar that goes into a beggers palm is one less that I can save for emergencies. As we grow older, we need more cash on hand to pay for medications to alleviate the various things that go wrong with skin, ears, eyes and feet. So my doctor’s, dentist and pharmacy will get first crack at my little paycheck from now on.
This attitude can be compared to use of the oxygen mask on planes that lose air pressure. I will get my mask on first before trying to help that kid in the next seat. Wait- I have my mask on, so someone else can help the kid.
