Before I got this blog I wanted to write to you about the mistakes you made in one of your early books.
The plot involves the Antelope Valley in California where I lived for a while after 2001.
You have the evil persons chucking a man out of a helicopter over the valley because it seemed to be uninhabited. Not so. There is only one blank space that is not full of people at night, and that is the Saddle Back Butte State Park outside of Palmdale.
There are many mini ranches, airports, ultrlight fields, glider ports, dry lake beds full of campers, motorcyclists, dune buggys, land yachts, prisons, drone testing sites, quartz mines, and aircraft junk yards. Even the Saddleback State Park has hikers, and a body would not go for long unnoticed. In the meantime, the buzzards you had circling with the dawn do not hang out in empty areas, but the few that do live in the valley for a while are roosting in my neighbors tall trees in Apple Valley.
The ravens and coyotes get to road kill first. The turkey buzzards, on the other hand can be seen thermaling in the thousands on their way to Mexico. They find the best thermals over the shopping mall parking lots.
Another clue that you just looked at an outdated atlas of the area was that you had our hero “passing by” Big Bear while coming in from Barstow. Yes, the road does pass by but the road to Big Bear is on top of the mountain range, many miles away and many feet in higher altitude.
The most ignorant part is having our hero kill the helicopter pilot by snapping his neck sideways trying to convince a future investigator that the pilot suffered his injuries in a hard landing in his helicopter.
Sorry, if a hard landing is made, and there is a fatality, the death is caused by spinal compaction, and leaves no obvious injury. Also the marks made in the desert floor between a hard landing and a soft landing which you have the pilot make would be immediately suspicious to any amateur sleuth.
In future tales do your homework, especially if it involves aviation. We pilots hate it when there is wrong information bandied about so carelessly.
Try not to use runty actors in movies too, as your Jack Reacher is a pretty big man!
