Most religions tell of life on Earth starting, progressing and then ending. Where the person goes after that is up for interpretation. Some religions teach that dead people go to unpleasant places with various names. Others go to a very upscale habitat and garner a reward for past good behavior. This is commonly known as salvation and or being cast into outer darkness.
But wait!- there is another avenue!
Some think that a person can earn points and achieve a good life because they had earned it in a previous existence. Others think that we can earn rewards and punishments in this life and keep going around in the Circle of Life until we get it correct.
The LDS holds that all souls originated in a celestial habitat, and had some big war. Some achieved righteousness as they were the valiant warriors on the side of right. Others that were not as valient were punished with a black skin or horrible diseases when they were born into earthly life. On the other hand they may have chosen this punishment to get further points for future use.
Hard to tell, when the doctrine keeps changing there.
Nobody agrees on what this pre-existence looks like, or who was running the store out there.
If there was a big fight, who started it? What was the initial cause and who was the A-Team?
There also seems to be a waiting room , or Spirit Prison, where souls wait to enter bodies on earth.
So what is going on while waiting in the queue? Do they have chores? Do they watch and interfere with the weather? Do they have influence over what kind of mother is handed out?
Someone somewhere must have the background story on this, but in the meantime, we are all free to make up our own stories.
