Where was the village when I was out living in my car raising a child on welfare? Well, the answer was that the village was there and it was called Food Stamps, free dental and medical care, and child support.
The jobs were all at the poverty level so that is where we lived in the village.
Years ;later a woman thanked me for having this child, as he was a great member of the temple in S.F teaching about Buddhism, and acting with compassion.
This thanks to me was unexpected and quite rare, I suspect, but the achievement was not in bearing the child, but raising him so that he coulds pread the compassion around.
I would like more recognition for single parenting, as it is a hard and long road to success.
